I hate to burst your bubble, but the screen DOES scratch. My iPhone slipped out of my left hand. I grabbed it with my right hand before it fell. However, in the process the screen banged against my watch on my left wrist and the screen was seriously scratched. There are now about 7 scratches on the screen. I don’t know how to fix them. Any suggestions?

  • 2 Tom // Jul 9, 2007 at 8:15 pm

I don’t even know how mine got a scratch on the screen. I noticed it the next day. Maybe it was there when I bought it. It’s not really visible when the screen is on, but I can feel it when I touch the screen. I hope someone comes out with a glass polish. The plastic polishes for current iPods wont work on glass. I also wonder if polishing will hurt the touch sensor.

  • 3 trentblase // Jul 10, 2007 at 6:02 am

Yes, I dropped mine on a WOOD FLOOR and it got scratches. How can wood scratch glass, you ask… I’m wondering if I got one of the plastic screens by accident! I’m going to try some glass scratch remover, but it would be nice to verify that there is no special coating on the screen before I do so.

  • 4 Tom // Jul 12, 2007 at 4:53 pm

Trentblase, if you use glass scratch remover, let us know how it comes out and what you used.

I have tons of scratches on my iphone. I think there from my diamond earrings since its right next to my ear all the time. Hope they come out with something to fix it. I got the crystal film to prevent any further scratching, but my screen is already jacked up.

  • 6 treeling // Sep 22, 2007 at 12:43 am

Ayup. I’ve got a gorgeous inch long scratch on my screen and it had no special serious accidents that caused it– just hanging out in my purse.

I tried displex–don’t bother. There’s no coating and it doesn’t damage your screen. It does, however, fill in your scratch which makes it nice and REFRACTIVE! A RAINBOW scratch. Adorable. Windex will probably take it back to being an ugly inch long scratch again… but displex does not have what it takes to polish glass this hard.

  • 7 tomwans // Oct 12, 2007 at 10:12 pm

do you think any glass filler will work? or is there a special coating on the glass

  • 8 Joel // Oct 15, 2007 at 3:32 pm

has anyone had any luck with scratches yet? i just noticed that my dog accidentally scracthed my screen up a bit…

  • 9 Joe // Oct 15, 2007 at 5:10 pm

treeling: It appears displex is made for plastic cellphone screens and not glass so that is probably why it isn’t up to the task. I am curious to see if an eye glass scratch polish could do the trick.

  • 14 Konstantin // Nov 14, 2007 at 5:28 pm

@gene: It’s called aluminum :) There is no paint, it’s just plain metal…

I think the replacement glass - if and when it finally comes out for mac repair shops - is going to be a huge success!

  • 15 Konstantin // Nov 14, 2007 at 5:29 pm

@madphill: you cannot polish glass. period. physical impossibility.

  • 16 snipereye // Nov 18, 2007 at 6:58 am

Well, i’ve had my iphone since july 29, one month after it was released. First off to answer gene’s question, I don’t think they used paint on it, just brushed aluminium. Second the screen of my iphone is scratched. Its a VERY fine scratch, hardly noticeable, but its a good inch and a half long. Third, i used to have a rubber case on my iphone, ruined the chrome ring. anybody know how to fix that?

  • 18 nathan // Nov 20, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Here is a link for a website that tells you how to remove scratches from glass.

    They used Cerium Oxide.

I haven’t tried as of yet.

  • 19 Juan // Nov 27, 2007 at 4:31 am

I have a scratch on my iphone as well. I’m not sure how it happened. My guess is that it was either accidentally rubbed against by a diamond ring, or a small piece of stone was on a table i set it on. It won’t come out… I’ve been working on it with ‘applesauce’ polish (by hand) and it seems to be getting slightly better. Mixed it with some ‘bar keepers friend’ and it seems to be even more effective. I think i may have this scratch totally out with the mixture. I was afraid to use a rotary tool, because it can often be too much, like when i ruined my other ipod…

  • 20 jake // Nov 29, 2007 at 12:16 am

    We need a remedy!

  • 23 JoeDoe // Feb 26, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Go see an optician. They can remove scratches from glass (iPhone’s screen is made of optical grade glass). Might cost you a few bucks, works 100% even for serious scratches. Forget about all that plastic screen polish (Displex and other).

I have a 1.5″ vertical scratch on mine. It got scratched at the airport in one of those rough plastic TSA bins at the security checkpoint. It sucks.

    hi
i scratched my iphones chrome how to get rid of them ?

  • 27 Tommy B // Apr 3, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I dunno if this is still active. This may sound like a big scam, but all you need to remove scratches from an iPhone is the last thing you would expect…..a banana. That’s right, a banana. You need to cut a small slice of the banana, and use the flat side to put an even coat over the iPod screen/back. Then, get your banana peel and rub that across it a few times, this ensures all the scratches etc. are filled. Then get some glass cleaner, put a small amount of glass cleaner on a piece of COTTON cloth, not microfibre as this will create more scratches surprisingly, and rub around until all the banana is gone. The scratches should appear visibly reduced. For VERY deep scratches I would use BRASSO.

Note: I have not tried this on my iPhone yet, I have simply seen a video online of this method working on the front and back of an iPod nano. If you choose to try this method i will not be held responsible for any further damage, although…you can’t really do much damage using a banana can you?

  • 28 RomeBurns // Apr 4, 2008 at 3:03 pm

I dropped my iphone while i was walking along the street and it slid along the concrete about 5 feet.
I’m sooooo pissed off about it.
It scratched/chipped the screen and f***ed up the backside.
    So choked.

  • 29 dj // Apr 4, 2008 at 9:16 pm

    loads of scratches rubbish

  • 30 Mark Ringwald // May 30, 2008 at 4:51 am

I left my iPhone in the same pocket as my 2g iPod nano, there’s one tiny but deep scratch, and a few slivers here and there.

  • 31 johannes // Jun 24, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I was drunk. When I woke up two days later, my iPhone was all scratchy.
I guess the best method for getting rid of the scratches is to get really drunk again, sleep for two days, and wake up to find the iPhone all shiny again. But.. maybe it doesn’t work that way. Perhabs if I get really sober and stay awake for two days, and THEN…
gah. I’m just pissed about the screen..

  • 32 Tyson // Jun 25, 2008 at 5:14 am

Ifyou can still touch the scrren anr he ipod/iphone still responds with screen protecters on THM glass polish won’t do an thing to your iPod or iPhone but fill n he scratches your iPod or iPhone will still work just fine .Take It to where ever you would go to get your eye glasses fixed and see if they can fill in the scratches or go bye some sctratch remover that you would normally use to remove scratches from your eye glasses

  • 33 Tyson // Jun 25, 2008 at 5:19 am

that first part to my last comment was if you can still touch the screen and the ipod/iPhone still responds with a screen protector on then glass polish…

    -Sorry that was my bad-

I scratched the face of my phone by putting it on the window, and the metal blinds put a scratch on it. (I was in a dorm room of it gives a better setting.). Tried several suggestions none led to success. I never used a case as I didn’t like them and also did not think it would get scratched. I bought Bodyguardz and covered my phone with it. I cannot see the scratch anymore. I wish I had taken a before and after picture but did not. I even had a friend who commented on the scratch just after it happened. I showed him my phone after installing Bodyguardz and he asked where my scratch went? I don’t know how it worked, I just know it did.

  • 39 Anonymous // Aug 17, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I dropped mine during a roller coaster ride and fell in my seat. It scratched :(

  • 40 DJ // Aug 24, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Irony - I bought my 3G yesterday. I went in today to buy a case after playing with the phone the last 24 hours because I was afraid I would damage it dropping it. Polished the screen, polished the plastic case cover. The plastic cover scratched the screen as I put it on.

Good thing I wanted to protect my iPhone.

  • 41 Sergio // Sep 5, 2008 at 5:40 am

I`m not to worried about the scratches on the screen because thank god I still dont have any what worries me is that there was an aplication where the touch would not respond to my little cousins touch so she pressed as hard as she could and I dont know if that affects the sensors on the phone screen…??

  • 42 imran // Oct 3, 2008 at 4:32 pm

i’m buying a set of bodygaurdz right now. i just got a scratch on my 3g… have NO IDEA how it got there.

i owned the first iphone, and never once had an issue with scratches. the 3g, on the other hand, is much much much more scratch prone.

  • 43 imran // Oct 3, 2008 at 6:26 pm

BTW. i just went to my eye doctor and they told me there was nothing they could do because the front is plastic not glass… ?

  • 44 KBS // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:30 am

I see a lot of suggestions, but no one is saying is any of these suggestions work? has ANYONE at all had any success on removing a deep scratch from the screen?

  • 45 john // Oct 16, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Easy remedy for a small scratch. Fill the scratch with petrolium jelly. The scratch will still be there, but it won’t be as annoying. Then cover that screen and take care of it!

  • 46 lolly // Oct 24, 2008 at 12:58 pm

My iphone is scratched, I don’t like iphone protectors ’cause I like to easily slide my iphone in and out of my pocket not to mention, the phone looks better all by itself, anyway, I also keep my keys in pocket, duh, I guess that’s how it got scratched, bummer!

  • 47 steven // Nov 13, 2008 at 8:27 pm

I dropped it on linoleum and it solid and made one huge scratch kinds deep and it pissed me off. It ruined a friendship.

  • 48 Scott // Nov 23, 2008 at 5:06 am

There’s truly no way to remove a scratch from any service that I know of. Think about it. Lets say you scratch your door on your car. You take it to a body shop to repair the scratch. The only thing the shop can do is sand everything around the scratch to the same level of the scratch. Then apply body putty and sand some more. So in essence, the scratch is never really removed. Makes sense Right?
I think optometrists would not want to be held reliable for fixing a phone. The best thing I think to do is go on Google and search for “How to fix a scatched car headlight lens made of glass”. You can find great answers that can be related to any scratched glass problem. As far as plastic surfaces, use “PlastX” from Wal-Mart. This stuff is the S**t. This stuff even fixes scratched CD surfaces.
    -Peace

  • 49 Mike // Dec 4, 2008 at 6:48 pm

There is a hairline scratch on mine too… It goes in the middle of the screen :( It’s hard to see but you can see it. I applied a invisible shield and now it’s not visible. I might replace the screen if it gets any worse. i’d ebay and do it myself.

I just got the tiniest small scratch on my iphone one on the front top right, and one on the chrome apple logo on the back, I was so depressed at the sight of this that I puked. (No joke).

Any hoo, I found a solution to this problem :D.

Firstly I tried Brasso, Which can be found in most stores and handy centre’s. to start with I put a small dab of it on a soft cotton piece of material and gently wiped the scratch, and then afterwards, I put some lemon juice onto the Scratch ** Supposedly helps glass (Some thing to do with the acidity, hell would I know), this worked a little and reduced the scratch a bit.

After all that ^^ The main savior of the day was….. good old flouride.. get some of that tooth paste preferably mint, Just a small dab. and then keep rubbing the scratch the the toothpaste for about 5 minutes if its quite deep and then it’ll make it sparkling new again.

more help add meh on msn, xxpegstarxx@hotmail.co.uk

WARNING: DO NOT USE PLASTIC SCREEN PROTECTORS!! A SINGLE GRAIN OF SAND WILL FIND ITS WAY UNDER AND SCRATCH YOUR IPHONE MAJORLY!!!!! THIS HAPPENED TO ME AND MORE THAN ENOUGH OF MY FRIENDS/FAMILY. TRUST ME!! If you currently have one on your iphone/iPod, take it off. REMEBER: I am talking about the cheap plastic adhesive protectors. Not protectors like ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD. if you are wise you will not heed this warning. Buy yourself a rubber skin (EX:Incipio avail. at your AT&T store for $20) and throw out the cheap plastic protector. Be careful not to buy the fold-open style with magnets. NO MAGNETS.

I think my iphone has a plastic screen protector installed on it and if i change that everything ll be all right but i am not sure that this specific plastic can really be removed I think is the preinstalled plastic protector by Apple and it cannot be removed..

    I can’t freakin believe it!!

After only 1 week of blissful joy that I have been receiving with my iPhone 3G I get out the soft cloth that comes with it to clean off all the oils and fingerprints from use when I notice a SCRATCH?!?!?!

What caused it I have not yet figured out. It was either a tiny piece of grit from the cleaning cloth of caused by a LOOSE THREAD inside the carrying case that AT&T SOLD ME!!

I have since bought a soft felt lined carrying case that was 1/3rd the price and so much better than the crap that AT&T sold me!!

I have just ordered the iDrops product; you can bet that I’m hoping with all of my being that this scratch removing product works!!!

Shortly after I bought my iPhone I noticed the chrome ring has alot of scratches . I would like to know how to get rid of them . I’m going to try some of the things recommend on this website. If it works I’ll let you know! It not fair to spend this much money on a phone and have it all scratched up. I did nothing to mine but put a case on it.

Ok so i dropped my iPhone on a concreat floor at a construction site. And when I picked it up I saw what apears to be a small blade of grass on the inside of the screen. I can move the object by shaking the phone. Dose anyone know how to remove the screen so I can get this thing out of there? Any help would be nice. Jefflovall@yahoo.com

Heyy guys sorry to say this it there is not really a way to fix the scratches. Apple tho, has come out with a replacement screen for $199 that replaces the screen earpiece home button volume power and the chrome ring. I don’t think it’s really work it but I thought I should put it out there

I can only imagine that a jewler might have some insight on this problem, I took a watch with a scratched crystal into a jewler once and within 5 minutes it was fixed, I might stop in tomarrow to fix the scratch I did today, the let everyone know how it goes

I noticed a scratch this morning, I can’t believe that its there, I even argued to my daughter that , if it’s glass…,why would anyone place a plastic film to protect if? Ok, so now ghat I’ve placed this comment, is there a solution ?

Mine was in my purse next to my keys, so my keys are the iPod assasin. Rather than spend time finding a product that doesn’t work, I bought a cheap screen protector. So far, so good. I can still see the scratch, but I have not gotten any more. I can’t even tell the protector is there since I also have a rubber case that hides the edges. One benefit is that I can no longer feel the scratches as I run my finger over them.

i think that the iPhone is to delicate.

    1. the back of the iPhone needs to be in a different material or needs to have something to be protecting it.

    2. i’ve had my iPhone for 1 month and since the minute i got it its been in a rubber jcket” i got from best buy and then i looked at it and it had white blotches on the sides of the back ( theyre barely seeable, only in the light ) also i saw it had very small scratches. I took it to the apple store and they said that those rubber cases attract dust like a magnet and since the back is made of cheap plastic anything will scratch it. So now i have the microfiber cloth in the case.

    3. if the iPhone is so expensive and “powerfull” why dont they make it of finer material or make the protection plan cover more, i mean c’mon they dont cover loss or theft!!!! Apple should be more realistic and down to earth and know that just because some people can afford the iPhone doesnt mean that they can affford to pay the 600 - 700 bucks to get a brand new one if they loose it or it gets stolen!

Finally i think apple and whoever the creators of apple are should begin to fix these problems fo free or a very low cost. Its not our fault that the iPhone gets messed so easily and they shouldnt lie and say the screen is strong against scratches when its not!

And dont get me wrong because i LOVE my iPhone to death i just think the things should be different with this phone dont you think??

brasso works. Ive used it on glass watches for years and even a glass sliding door, and now the iphone. It takes a couple hours for a light 1 inch scratch, just use gentle pressure in a swirl, not a straight line, and take your time. Mine took 3 hours but it looks better than new! really, better than new and smoother than ever.

I had some shallow scratches from using a brillow (sp?) pad on the glass to wash off some stuff that was not coming off. You know the yellow and green dish sponge. Yup, that scratched my phone.

I own a rotating buffer and ran it under that for about five minutes and the scratches finally buffed out. Phone looks great and works great.
