Iphone Scratches: Preventions and Remedies

November 14th, 2007 · 16 Comments

Iphone Scratches. That’s why you’re here.

There are two kinds of conversations going on at this site: People talking about fixes and remedies, and people talking about prevention.

Prevention

For the prevention crowd, you can always try some of those thin clear plastic shields or go the Alcatraz route and imprison your iPhone inside a protective case. Go with rubber or plastic or yes, even leather.

But who cares about prevention, right? Let’s talk remedies.

Remedies

Well, I can’t authoritatively speak to any surefire remedies. Thats why you should leave a comment below.

    Any of the sites I’ve looked at for Displex have a warning that it’s not to be used with a touch screen. However, I’ve read also that some people have tried it with success.

    Attention: use only on non-coated surfaces and plastics; when used on mobile phones, treat only the transparent portions of the display lens. Not for use with touch screen displays.

    What they mean by dont use on touch screens are the kind of touch screens where if you press just a little too hard, the lcd screen below wil get distorted. The iPhones actual screen is protected by the glass, so, technically, all you are doing is polishing a pane of glass.

    my iphone just got scratched recently, on the back portion, which they say is extremely “scratchable”. it looks like some of the aluminum paint fell off, there’s two small but deep cuts. i dont know how or if a remedy is still available at this point. help?

    @JoeyD

    the iphone/ipod touch screen is a capacitative touch screen meaning it senses electrically conductive materials in close proximity. i have been able to use it through my shirt where i dont even have to touch it. i believe the warning for touch screen applies more for pressure sensing touch screens. for this reason, i believe it would work if you were to use it, even being a touch screen

    @JoeyD

    displex’s warning is for RESISTIVE touch displays, and not capacitive touch. This is because resistive touch panels have a thin, plastic membrane outer “lens” suspended over a conductive layer, then finally backed with a glass lens. No desire to explain how it works, but the bottom line is the outer membrane that you actually touch on a RESISTIVE touch panel is too soft and very easily scratched by the Displex polish.

    The polishing compound is slightly abrasive, and will put fine scratches all over the soft membrane, resulting in a haze with repeated use.

    @Funkus
    I have no idea what your talking about . The iPhone IS invincible . Kind of . A friend of mine has this huge purse with all her crap in it . Papers , pens , make up , etc . Lady stuff . :P
    She keeps her iPhone there with everything else .

    NOT ONE FREAKIN SCRATCH .
    NOT O N E .

    Kind of sucks because I also baby my iPhone . I gave mine a screen protector and put it in a silicone case . IT IS ALL SCUFFED UP . Seriously it sucks .

    I noticed mine gets very scuffed up with tiny scratches on the chrome parts . Anyone else find this ? It’s very annoying because I really try to protect my iPhone and yet it’s all scuffed up /

    Hey. Got a couple scratches on the screen of my iPhone, I was thinking about using Displex, but it says NOT to use on a touch screen.

    Can anyone who’s used Displex vouch that it works on a touch screen and that after using it you ran into no problems. Get back to me. Thanks.
